NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards

1
Q

WHAT IS NERVOUS SYSTEM

A

the nervous system is a network of cells which enables the ability for the brain to receive information to coordinate a response.
(receives information from out and inside the body)

Q

EXAMPLE OF RECEIVE, PROCESS AND RESPOND?

A

receive: sensory stimuli from the external world (environment)
process: brain - ‘it is really hot outside’
respond: person takes jumper off - is no longer hot

Q

CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM? aaa

A
  • process information received through sensory systems and other parts of the body to activate appropriate actions
-located in middle of the body
  • consist of brain and spinal cord

Q

AUTONOMIC NS DIVISIONS:

A

sympathetic ns: flight or fight response, increase HR, dilated eyes, sweating and hotness
parasympathetic ns: relaxing state, normal HR, eyes constrict, cooler
(returns body back to homeostasis).

16
Q

SOMATIC NS?

A
  • carries sensory information to the CNS and motor information from the CNS
  • sensory information is recieved at sensory receptor sites in the body and carried along sensory neural pathways.
17
Q

SOMATIC NS DIVISIONS?

A

Sensory function: someone touched your hand the sns sends information to the skin to brain
Motor function: voluntarily move a body part

18
Q

AUTONOMIC NS?

A
  • network of nerves that carries messages between the CNS, heart, lungs. glands etc
  • ANS regulates, or controls
19
Q

WHAT IS THE BRAIN?

A

network of cells that processes information receieved from nerves

20
Q

WHAT IS THE SPINAL CORD?

A
  • long, thin bundle of nerve tissue that extends from brain to lower back
