nervous system Flashcards
what are the three phases of transmission
resting potential, action, potential and recovery phase
what is the inside and the outside of the axon like during the resting potential?
outside had high [Na] and inside has high [K] and larger number of negatively charged organic ions
what does the sodium potassium pump do?
maintains that an even distribution of sodium and potassium ions
What is the membrane of an axon called
axomembrane
What is the cytoplasm in the axon called?
axoplasm
What are the two stages of action potential?
Upswing and downswing
What occurs in action potential upswing
Sodium gates, open and sodium enters the axon from outside
What is depolarization?
when the sodium enters the axon from the outside and changes the charge
to positive
What occurs in the downswing action potential?
potassium gates, open and potassium enters the outside from the inside
What is repolarization?
Potassium enters the outside from the inside which changes that inside to negative
What is the recovery phase?
Ions need to be returned to their original position so another transmission can occur
What occurs in recovery phase
Sodium is pumped back to the outside and potassium is pumped to the inside
What is saltatery conduction?
when the impulse jumps from no to node
When does saltatory conduction occur?
in neurons that have myelin sheath
