Neck Blue Boxes Flashcards
How does a fracture of the hyoid bone occur and how does it present?
Occurs in people who are manually strangled by compression of the throat
Depresses body of hyoid bone onto thyroid cartilage
Unable to elevate hyoid and move it anteriorly beneath the tongue; makes swallowing difficult; could result in aspiration pneumonia
What is Congenital torticollis?
What does this result from?
Presentation?
Could occur when?
Contraction or shortening of cervical msucles that produces twisting of the neck and slanting of the head
Usually from a fibrous tissue tumor in SCM
Head tilts toward affected side, and face turns away
Could occur from a breech delivery
What is spasmodic torticollis?
Abnormal toxicity of the cervical muscles
Will see sustained turning, tilting, flexion or extending of the neck
Severance of phrenic nerve, phrenic nerve block, and phrenic nerve crush is what?
Paralysis (temp. Or not) of the diaphragm
What happens when the suprascapular n. Is injured?
Waiter tip position
Where does a pyramidal lobe of thyroid gland come from?
Develops from remnants of the epithelium and connective tissue of the thyroglossal duct
What happens when the recurrent laryngeal nerve is injured?
Could cause hoarseness and temporary aphonia or disturbance of phonation and laryngeal spasm may occur
What puts the parathyroid gland at risk?
The variable position of the parathyroid glands puts them in danger of being damaged or removed during surgical procedures
Could result in tetany - a severe neurologic syndrome character by muscle twitches and cramps caused by decreased serum calcium levels
What happens to the larynx as you age?
The walls of the larynx strengthen in lakes during puberty and the laryngeal cavity enlarges
All of the laryngeal cartilages will enlarge and the laryngeal prominence will become conspicuous in most males
