Action of the:
Temporalis M. ?
Elevate mandible
Retract mandible
Lateral movement of mandible
Action of the:
Lateral Pterygoid?
Bilaterally: protrudes mandible and opens mouth
Unilaterally: side to side movement (grinding - works with medial pterygoid too)
Actions of the:
medial pterygoid?
Bilaterally:
Elevates and protrudes mandible
Unilaterally:
Protrude mandible and side to side chewing (grinding)
What does the TMJ articulate with?

What supplies the TMJ?
What innervates the TMJ?
Branches of ECA;
Superficial temporal a.

V3
What occurs during gape at the TMJ?
Teeth are in occlusion
Everything is shifted posteriorly
Disc more anterior
What happens within 15 degrees of gape?
What happens over 15 degrees of gape?
Within: hinging
Over: whole head drops out of fossa and slides anteriorly on articular fossa, dislocating anteriorly, protrusion assisted by pterygoid
What is lateral pterygoid dysfunction?
Articular disc will not slide properly and will click against articular tubercle
What is a dislocation of the TMJ?
Results from blow to side of face, yawning, or taking a huge bite
Head of mandible slips out of mandibular fossa and is pulled anteriorly
Cannot close mouth
Facial and Auriculotemporal (V3) can be damaged
What happens for a posterior dislocation of the TMJ?
Requires a large amount of force to displace postglenoid tubercle and strong lateral ligament
What happens during arthritis of the TMJ?
Inflammation
Jaw pain, stiffness, joint grating
How do you block inferior alveolar n.?
Enter thru gums b/w coronoid notch and pterygomandibular raphe
What nerves could be injured during a dislocation of the TMJ?
Facial n.
Auriculotemporal n.
What happens if you fracture the neck of the mandible?
Otic ganglion is gone
No parotid gland stimulation
What happens if you fracture the ramus of the mandible?
No inferior alveolar n.
No mental n.
No sensation to chin
What happens if you fracture the corpus of the mandible?
Inferior alveolar n. Gone
Mental n. Gone
Where is the temporal fossa?
What muscle does it contain?
Space superior to zygomatic a.
