Q

Why would it be important for Christians to have any knowledge of Greek mythology? Is it important that Christians learn any of these stories?

A

I think it’s important for Christians to have the knowledge of Greek mythology bc it was in the Bible and took part of some of the stories. If we didn’t understand Greek mythology, we wouldn’t fully understand some of the stories in the Bible. For example, in the story of the 10 plagues, God sent them and directed each toward a god. The New Testament was also written during ancient Greek times, so knowing the culture of the ancient Greeks can help us understand the NT. Paul also talked about “false religions” and without the context of knowing Greek mythology, we can get confused on what he meant by that. It’s important for Christians to learn these stories because it can help us understand human nature.

Q

Story of Orpheus and Eurydice

A

Orpheus was given the gift of music and he would have no limit to his powers whenever he played the lyre and sang. He met Eurydice and fell in love with her but their marriage didn’t last long. Right after their wedding, Eurydice was stung by a viper and died. Orpheus was overwhelmed with grief so he went down to the underworld so he could bring Eurydice back. He sang to the gods to give Eurydice back to him and the gods couldn’t refuse so they listened to him on one condition, that he doesn’t look at Eurydice until they both have reached the upperworld again. Orpheus was too eager to look at her and accidentally looked too soon. He tried to grab her, but she fell into the dark and her last word was, “Farewell.” Orpheus tried to follow Eurydice down, but the gods did not let him and stopped him. Then he went to an isolated place in Thrace and was left alone playing his lyre. No one heard Orpheus playing except the trees, rocks, and rivers, but then Maenads came to him and killed him.
