Musculoskeletal system Flashcards
Muscle cells and tissues
made up of muscle fibres held together by connective tissue. Contain actin and myosin filaments
Sarcomere
Alternating light and dark bands - Basic contracitle unit of muscle fibres
Actin Filaments
Thinner filaments
Myosin
Thicker Filaments
Sliding Filament Theory
Actin and Myosin can slide over one another in order to contract
When a stimulus is recieved by nerve cell
Myosin uses ATP energy to bind and pull on actin. Actin filaments slide over thick myosin filaments. Causes sarcomere to shorten
When stimulus stops
Myosin and Actin Detach. Muscle relaxes
Skeletal Muscles
Attached by bones to tendons. Can pull but not push bones together. paired t perform in antagonistic pairs
Agonist
Muscle that brings about desired movement
Antagonist
Brings about the movement opposite to the agonist
