Muscular System Week 2 Flashcards
Main functions muscular system
Generate movement
Stabilise joints
Maintain posture
Help regulate temperature
Components are
Muscles
Tendons
Fascia
Sequence of a muscle contraction
Brain - impulse
Spinal cord
Peripheral nerve
Muscle - contracts
Tendon - pulls on bone
Movements - occurs at the joint
Types of muscle tissue
Not all muscles are the same either
Voluntary or involuntary
Three types
Smoot
Cardiac
Skeletal
Smooth muscle
Involuntary
-Walls of internal vessels ( arteries, arteriols ) intestines etc
- responsible for moving and stopping of the flow of fluids and other materials
Cardiac muscle
- produces the pumping action of the heart
- involuntary
- striated - striped ( looks simlair to voluntary muscle tissue under a microscope
Skeletal muscle
- Voluntary
- Enables movement of the skeleton
- straited - striped
Muscle actions
What can we do
- contract ( shorten )
- stop contracting / relax lengthen
Types of muscle contractions
Isometric:
- Muscle contracts- but no movement
Isotonic
- Muscle contracts and movement does occur
- Concentric is the postive half of the action - shortening
- eccentric - is the negative half of the action - lengthen
Muscle works in teams
Agonist - prime mover
Antagonist - opposing muscle
Synergist - assisting muscles
Fixations : stabilisers
Muscle terms (4)
- Attachment - tendons each muscles has at least 2
- origin - attachment that has little or no movement
- insertion - attachment that has the most movement
- muscle belly - thickets part usually in the middle
Tendons are
- connective tissue
- attaches to the muscle bone
- ext of muscle fascia
- very strong - takes the full force of the muscle
-few or no nerves or blood vessels
Fascia is
- connective tissue the encloses and separates muscle
- superficial and deep
- allows the Movement
- has passage ways for nerves or blood vessels
- inelastic and strong
