Where do the muscles of facial expressions lie?
Subcutaneous fascia (superficial layer)
Orbicularis oris
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - anterior nasal spine and midline above lips.
Insertion - fibres interlace with muscles around lips.
Action - closes and opens mouth, compresses and protrusion of lips.
Nerve supply - facial nerve; buccal branch
Blood supply - facial artery, maxillary and superficial temporal arteries.
Levator Labii Superioris
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - lower rim of orbit
Insertion - fibres of orbicularis oris at upper lip
Action - elevate upper lip
Innervation - facial nerve; zygomatic and buccal branches
Blood supply - facial and maxillary arteries
Depressor Labii Inferioris
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - beneath lowest part of oblique line of mandible
Insertion - orbicularis oris in lower lip
Action - depresses lower lip
Nerve supply - facial nerve, mandibular branch
Blood supply - facial and maxillary arteries
Zygomaticus minor
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - zygomatic arch
Insertion - orbicularis oris
Actions - elevate upper lip
Intervention - facial nerve; buccal and zygomatic branches
Blood supply - facial artery
Zygomaticus major
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - zygomatic arch
Insertion - travels downwards and medically to insert into orbicularis oris at angle of mouth
Action - elevated corners of mouth
Innervation - facial nerve; buccal and zygomatic branches
Blood supply - facial artery
Levator anguli oris
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - canine fossa of maxilla, below infraorbital foramen
Insertion - orbicularis oris at corner of mouth
Action - elevates corner of mouth
Nerve supply - facial nerve; buccal and zygomatic branches
Bloody supply - facial and maxillary arteries
Depressor anguli oris
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - beneath angle of mandible
Insertion - converges into angles of mouth and blends with orbicularis oris
Action - depresses coroner of mouth
Nerve supply - facial nerve; buccal and mandibular nerves
Blood supply - facial and maxillary arteries.
Mentalis
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - anterior surface of mandible (incisive fossa)
Insertion - skin covering skin
Action - pulls skin of skin up, helps clear food from labial surface
Innervation - facial nerve; mandibular branch
Blood supply - facial and maxillary arteries.
Buccinator
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - pterygomandibular raphae and buccal alveolar bone (maxillary and mandibular molar region)
Insertion - blend with orbicularis oris at corner of mouth
Action - pulls corner of mouth back and compress cheek again buccal surface of molars.
Nerve supply - facial nerve; buccal branch
Blood supply - facial and maxillary arteries.
How does the buccinator aid in mastication
Works in opposition with tongue to direct food to occlusal surfaces of teeth
Risorius
(Origin, insertion, action, innervation and blood supply)
Origin - angle of mandible
Insertion - corner of mouth
Action - retracts angle of mouth (assist in smiling)
Innervation - facial nerve; buccal branch
Blood supply - facial artery
Muscles that lie in the subcutaneous fascia can be divided into which groups
Mouth
Scalp
Neck
Eyes
Nose
Ears
