Muscles Flashcards
This broad muscle covers the top of the skull. Consists of 2 parts, the occipitalis and the frontalis
Occipitofrontalis muscles
A broad muscle arising in the temporal cavity and inserting in the mandible
Temporalis
A muscle arising from the zygomatic arch and inserting in the mandible
Masseter
The sphincter muscle that surrounds the eye socket
Orbicularis Oculi
A pyramid shaped muscle of facial expression. Lies beneath the frontalis and orbicularis oculi
Currogator
Frowning Muscle
Currogator
A muscle of facial expression that runs from the inside of the eye socket to the superior tarsal plate of the eyelid
Levator palpebrae superioris
Covers the bridge of the nose
Procerus
A flat band of muscles in the upper and lower red lips and integumentary lips
Orbicularis oris
Puckering Muscle
Orbicularis oris
Draws the scalp posteriorly and anteriorly, causing eyebrows to raise and wrinkles to form on forehead
Occipitofrontalis
A muscle of mastication and is the strongest chewing muscle. Closes the mandible. Assists in side to side movement of the mandible
Temporalis
A muscle of mastication that closes the mandible
Masseter
Closes the eyelid and compresses the lacrimal sac
Orbicularis Oculi
Draws the eyebrows inferiorly and medially, as in frowning
Currogator
Raises the upper eyelid
Levator palpebrae Superioris
Draws the skin of the forehead inferiorly, causing the transverse and vertical wrinkles in the forehead
Procerus
Closes the lips; compresses lips against teeth. Shapes lips during speech
Orbicularis Oris
Raises the upper lip and dilates the nostrils
Levator labii superioris alaequae nasi
Elevates and extends the upper lip
Levator labii superioris
A small muscle at the angle of the mouth
Levator anguli oris
Extends from the cheekbone to the angle of the mouth
Zygomaticus major
Laughing muscle
Zygomaticus major
Trumpeters muscle
Buccinator
The principle muscle of the cheek
Buccinator
Originates in the skin over the molar teeth and inserts into the skin at the anguli oris
Buccinator
Fasle smiling muscle
Risorius
Extends from the skin over the masseter muscles to the corners of the mouth
Tisorius
A muscle of facial expression that arises from the mandible to insert into the anguli oris
Depressor Anguli oris
Tirangularis
Depressor Anguli Oris
Quadratus
Depressor labii inferioris
The muscle located on the tip of the chin
Mentalis
Thin layer of muscle covering the anterior aspect of the neck
Platysma
A thick muscle that originates from the head of the sternum and clavicle, and inserts at the mastoid process of the temporal bone
Sternocleidomastoid
A double-bellied muscle of the neck which attaches to the mastoid process and the mandible
Digastric
Elevates the angle of the mouth
Levator anguli oris
Draws the upper lip superiorly and laterally
Zygomaticus minor
Draws the upper lip posteriorly, superiorly, and laterally, as in smiling or laughing
Zygomaticus Major
Compresses the cheek, and it pulls the anguli oris posteriorly. Produces the action of sucking
Buccinator
Draws corners of mouth posteriorly
Risorius
Depresses the angle of the mouth
Depressor anguli oris
Depresses the lower lip inferiorly and slightly laterally
Depressor Labii Inferioris
Elevates and protrudes the lower lip. Wrinkles the skin over the chin
Mentalis
Wrinkles the skin of the neck and chest. Depresses the mandible and anguli oris, as in pouting
Platysma
Rotates and depresses the head
Sternocleidomastoid
Draws the hyoid bone superiorly
Digastric
