Movement overview Flashcards
What is an agonist including each different types?
The muscles creating the movement
Prime mover = the main muscle responsible
Assistant mover = contributes less
Emergency mover = able to contribute weakly in case of injury
What is an antagonist and what do they do?
The muscle group that opposes the agonist
Relax and lengthen to allow movement of agonist to occur smoothly
Happens under tension to help coordinate the movement or to slow down and control limbs
Don’t stop generating tension
What is reciprocal inhibition?
Antagonist reduces tension/tone
Allows for coordinated movement
Open kinetic chain
What is co-contraction?
Antagonist increases tone/tension
Doesn’t equal tone/tension of agonist
Used for stability
Closed kinetic chain
