Hip Special Tests Flashcards
What does the Trendelenberg Sign test for and how is it performed?
Assesses the ability of hip abductors to stabilise the pelvis on femur
Ask patient to stand on 1 leg
Positive = one side of pelvis drops
What does the Modified Thomas Test test for and how is it performed?
Identifies tightness in specific muscle that crosses hip joint
Patient supine with end of plinth level with knees, both knees flexed to chest
Patient hugs one knee while you as therapist guide the other leg into extension
positive = reduced knee flexion (normal = 80-90•) or thigh abduction/resistance (short iliotibial band) or rotation of femur (shortened lateral rotators)
What does the Modified Ober’s Test test for and how is it performed?
Identifies tightness in tensor fascia lata and iliotibial band
Patient lying in side, lower leg flexed at hip and knee
Stand behind patient and extend and abduct their leg at hip, stabilising the pelvis
Keeping the hip in extension, the leg is allowed to lower
Positive = the hip remains in some abduction
Negative = the leg can be lowered to or below the plinth
