What are the risk factors of Sialadentitis?

A

mumps (although now rare due to MMR vaccine), bacterial from blockage of the gland with stone or poor hygiene, dehydration

Patient presents with abnormal tastes, cannot open his mouth very wide, and has a dry mouth. He is tender to palpation, has a fever, and slight facial swelling. What do you think?

A

Sialadentitis

How do you diagnose Sialadentitis?

A

pus drainage into mouth, CT scan or ultrasound if suspected abscess, Stetson’s duct may be red and irritated

How do you treat it?

A

radiology if suspected abscess; antibiotics if pus or fever, aspiration of abscess, stopping smoking, good oral hygiene, warm salt water rinses, sugar free suckers to stimulate saliva production, massage salivary glands

i. Tylenol for symptomatic therapy
ii. If spreads → IV antibiotics
iii. Clindamycin to cover more of gram (-) bugs that can develop

A

abscess, recurrent infection, spread of infection (cellulitis)
