Patient presents with breath orders, bright red/purple gums, shiny gums, bleeding gums, loose teeth and swollen gums. Dx?
Peridontitis
Early symptoms look like gingivitis
Etiology for peridontitis?
gum disease, inflammation of gums involving bone
What is the pathophysiology of peridontitis?
untreated gingivitis that spread to ligament, bones, and surrounding teeth causing teeth to fall out
Risk factors for Peridontitis?
long standing gingivitis, plaque builds up at base of teeth, soft tissue swelling will trap all of the plaque
Genetic inheritance: people can be prone to this
How can we diagnose peridontitis?
PE to check out gums; X-rays can be used to see surrounding boney structures
What should you consider in patients with peridontitis?
ee dentist 2+ times a year, surgery may be necessary for removal of dental plaque from inflamed gums. Bleeding & gum tenderness should go away in 1-2 weeks; teeth may need to be removed so that it doesn’t spread to neighboring teeth
What are some complications of peridontitis?
infection or abscess of soft tissue resulting in facial cellulitis, osteomyelitis of jaw, return of periodontitis, tooth loss, tooth flaring or shifting, trench mouth
What are some lifestyle modifications patients should make who suffer from peridontitis?
follow good oral hygiene; brush 2x/day, floss 1x/day, reduce gingivitis
