A

What is the pathophysiology of peridontitis?

A

untreated gingivitis that spread to ligament, bones, and surrounding teeth causing teeth to fall out

Risk factors for Peridontitis?

A

long standing gingivitis, plaque builds up at base of teeth, soft tissue swelling will trap all of the plaque

Genetic inheritance: people can be prone to this

How can we diagnose peridontitis?

A

PE to check out gums; X-rays can be used to see surrounding boney structures

What should you consider in patients with peridontitis?

A

ee dentist 2+ times a year, surgery may be necessary for removal of dental plaque from inflamed gums. Bleeding & gum tenderness should go away in 1-2 weeks; teeth may need to be removed so that it doesn’t spread to neighboring teeth

What are some complications of peridontitis?

A

infection or abscess of soft tissue resulting in facial cellulitis, osteomyelitis of jaw, return of periodontitis, tooth loss, tooth flaring or shifting, trench mouth

A

follow good oral hygiene; brush 2x/day, floss 1x/day, reduce gingivitis
