Patient presents with hearing loss (may occur slowly at first but continues to get worse). Hearing better in noisy environments than quiet ones. Dx?
Otosclerosis
Who does otosclerosis typically effect?
early to mid-adulthood, more common in women, affects both ears
What are the risk factors for otosclerosis?
ear exam, rinnes and webbers, neurologic exam
How may you Dx otosclerosis?
Temporal-bone CT may be done to rule out other causes of hearing loss, ear exam. Hearing test may help to determine if severe hearing loss.
Tx for otosclerosis?
Fluoride calcium, and vitamin D in early stages–surgery to remove bony overgrowth; hearing aids
What are some complications due to otosclerosis?
Complete deafness, nerve damage, infection, dizziness, pain, blood clot in ear post surgery
