Motor control assessment Flashcards
Temporal sequence in an analysis
- initial conditions
- preparation to do the movement
- initiation for the movement
- execution
- termination
Initial condition in temporal sequence
- when you first look at them
- posture
- readiness to interact with environment
- environmental conditions (is it static/moving)
Preparation in temporal sequence
- do they recognize that they are being asked to preform a movement
- organization of movement plan by
1. identify/recognize the stimulus
2. select the response/cognitively and physically prepared
Initiation of temporal sequence
movement begins
- timing
- direction
- smoothness
Execution of temporal sequence
main thing that is assessed
- amplitude: do they move through the full ROM/the extent to which they move
- direction
- speed
- smoothness: the most objective component
Termination of temporal sequence
Do they have to correct themselves such as shifting their weight or reaching for something
- timing
- stability
- accuracy
Stages of motor control
- mobility
- static postural control
- dynamic postural control
- transitional mobility
- skill
Mobility (stage of motor control)
- do they have the ROM necessary to complete the motion
Static postural control
- ability to maintain COM over BOS without moving when the BOS is fixed
- this is needed in order to have dynamic postural control
Static postural control/stability assessment and observations
- BOS: how wide
- position and stability of COM within BOS
- Amount of postural sway
- stabilization by UE or LE
- loss of balance/fall risk
- assistance needed
- environmental influences
Dynamic postural control
- maintaining postural stability while moving over the BOS
- weigh-shifting in any direction
- limbs continue to bear weight
Dynamic postural control- assessment`
- degree of control maintained by weight-bearing segments
- range and control of dynamically moving segments
- assistance needed
- environmental influences such as how busy the surface is
Transitional mobility
- movement from one position to another (a transfer)
- rolling to supine
- sit to stand
- weight bearing is maintained throughout the motion
Transitional mobility assessment
- initiation
- strategy utilized
- overall control
- termination
- assistance needed
- environmental influences
Skill
- performing a coordinated sequence of movements to achieve a goal
- walking, running, bouncing, kicking a ball
- interaction with environment
- at least one extremity is out of weight bearing
- voluntary movement
