A
external influences and internal mechanics that direct our behaviour. inner drive towards a goal

- effects the amount of effort you put in
- teams benefit from highly motivated players
- affects performance relative to ability

describe intrinsic motivation
A
- comes from within the performer and characterised by feelings or pride and satisfaction from completing a task (thrill of scoring)
- will want to continue to participate

A
- more temporary includes both tangible and intangible rewards from an outside source (pb so got intangible reward)

what might a coach do to increase motivation
A
- make training fun and varied
- adjust environment to suit players (agility)
- inspire by showing role models
- as experience is gained more demanding goals can be set
- consider personality
- ensure external rewards do not undermine intrinsic motivation

advantages of intrinsic motivation
A
- wanting to learn to boost performance
- more ‘valuable’ with individual taking part for their own benefit
- encourage life long participation
- more self sufficient

disadvantages of intrinsic motivation
A
- enjoyment may disappear, motivators may not be enough to maintain motivation to participate
- cognitive learner could find it difficult and not fun so need more than just intrinsic motivation

advantages of extrinsic motivation
A
- rewards may have more impact
- rewards like badges may be very effective to get children into the sport
- may improve confidence

disadvantages of extrinsic motivation
A
- extrinsic motivation may undermine intrinsic motivators
- may not lead to long term participation/loose effect
- if rewards are removed motivation may decline (once you’ve achieved all the badges)
- may be demotivating if you didn’t achieve the level required for the extrinsic reward (swimming badge)
