Guidance Flashcards
what is visual guidance
- can be demonstration to help performer form a mental image
- vision is dominant sense and we learn through imitation
example of visual guidance
teacher demonstrates a chest pass drawing attention to hand position and extension of elbows
advantages of visual guidance
- provides learner with a mental image of the skill
- draws attention to key points (gives cues)
- good for less complex skills where less information is given
- vision is dominant sense
disadvantages of visual guidance
- can demotivate learner if its a highly complex skill as they wont be able to do it
- static visual aids do not give information about movement patterns
what is verbal guidance
- when the performer is given instructions on what to do given by the coach often used to give cues.
- Most frequent guidance method
- learner needs to relate info given to the skill
example of verbal guidance
coach explaining tactics in changing rooms before a game
giving coaching points e.g. flexed elbows
advantages of verbal guidance
- tactics can be explained
- gives technical info/key points and highlights cues
- feedback can be given immediately
- good for open skill as less decisions for performer
- most effective in autonomous
disadvantages of verbal guidance
- players need to understand basic terminology
- overload beginners with information
- learners may lose concentration easily
- difficult to explain complex
what is manual guidance
coach physically manipulating the learner through correct movement
example of manual guidance
coach supports the learner in a handstand
what is mechanical guidance
involves the use of equipment to help support the learner and shape the skill
example of mechanical guidance
trampolinist using a harness or a swimmer using floats, arm bands or rings
advantages of mechanical and manual guidance
- builds confidence
- eliminates danger
- gives early feel for whole skills
- promotes confidence and ensures safety for the learner particularly where there is an element of danger
- allows performer to experience spatial timing
disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance
- learner can become dependant on this form of guidance
- the feel of the movement with the guidance is different to actual movement
- learner does not get opportunity to correct mistakes in technique
- learner becomes dependant on support and interferes with kinaesthetic awareness
- proximity of coach ay be upsetting
