Aggression Flashcards
what is the definition of aggression
the intent to harm outside the rules of the sports e.g. studs up tackle
what is the definition of assertion
forceful behaviour within the laws of the event
can be called channelled aggression
what is the instinct theory of aggression/trait perspective
uses the aggression as natural response and generally inherited.
- sport and exercise are seen as acceptable places to release built up aggression e.g. shoving someone as natural response after being highly tackled
what are the problems with instinct theory of aggression
too simplistic and generalised, doesn’t talk about environment or upbringing affecting aggression (twins can be different), sometimes rational thought is behind behaviour
what is the frustration-aggression hypothesis
drive to goal (1v1) - obstacle to goal (being marked) -frustration - aggression = success (sprint down wing) and catharsis (get passed player) / punishment (yellow card)
aggression channelled correctly (assertion) leads to success
frustration will likely produce aggression badly when individual is close to goal then fails (fall in final lap), frustration caused deliberately (being tripped), blocking of goal is unfair (bad ref decision)
problems with the frustration-aggression
frustration doesn’t always lead to aggression and aggression can occur with no frustration
what is the aggressive cue hypothesis
frustration (loosing game) - increased arousal = presence of cues (don’t agree with ref) - increased chances of aggression (punch ref) / absence of cues (happy with decision) - reduces chances of aggression (less likely to punch ref)
problems with the aggressive cue hypothesis
generalised people are aggressive without cues, with cues not everyone is aggressive
what is the social learning theory
- watching, copying
- aggression and non aggression can be learnt
- reinforcement is key
- effective when watching role model/ player/ coach
what are the problems with the social learning theory
twins in the same environment may not be aggressive, in the bobo doll experiment not everyone hit the doll so not 100% reliable
