Moral development Flashcards
Kohlberg’s 3 stages of moral development
- Preconventional
- Conventional
- Posttconventional
Piaget’s 2 stages of moral development
Heteronomous morality stage: 4-8. Children focus on rules or laws and believe laws to be unchangeable. Motivated by fear of punishments
Autonomous morality: 8-adulthood. Laws are relative and changeable
Preconventional stage
- Punishment orientation
- Self interest
Operates using someone else’s law. Guided by rewards and punishments rather than morality. Egocentric - worried about what’s going to happen to them
Conventional stage
- Social perspective
- Authority and social order
Postconventional stage
- Social contract orientation
- Universal ethical principles
When are children able to separate moral rules and social convention
Age 4
Role of parents on moral development
Discipline is linked to hostility and aggression as evidenced by the Bobo doll experiment. It teaches children to be hostile but does not impact morals.
4 axes of Baumrind’s parenting style
- Indulgent to Authoritative
- Neglectful to Authoritarian
Indulgent and authoritative is high…
Senstivity - meaning spending time with them
Indulgent and neglectful is low…
Control - allowing for children to behave poorly and have low expectations
Authoritative and authroitarian is high…
Control
Authoritarian parents tend to maintain a
punishment and reward orientation thus a low stage of moral reasoning
Indulgent and neglectful children tend to
Social responsibility since the parents dont correct or modify the children’s actions
Authoritative
Socially responsible and altruistic - the parents explain why their actions are immoral.
Most common parenting style in western cultures
Authoritative
