Language development Flashcards
As babies approach their first birthday, they become less and less sensitive to
Phonetic distinctions outside of thier language
How do babies connect what they’re saying with what they mean
One hypothesis looks at association i.e. parent points at bottle and sas bottle
However, sometimes the baby is looking at something else so its not that simple
Joint attention:
When baby hears new word, they turn around to see what the speaker is looking at to assign the new word to what they’ve heard.
When do babies say their first word
1st birthday
What is the first word usually for a baby
A noun
Overextension error:
Word that refers to 1 thing and babies overextend the reference e.g. looks up and says moon, sees a cricket ball and thinks thats a moon too
Underextension error
Common noun that they treat as a proper name e.g. knows name of family pet as dog but doesn’t extend that to any other dog.
Overregularisaion error
At ages 3-8, something goes on in the mind where the grammatical rule is extracted and becomes overapplied. They take the past tense and the stem and just add ‘ed’ e.g. blowed up
