Aggresion Flashcards
What is alcohol myopia and what are the 4 things it leads to?
It is the effect of alcohol on perceptual and cognitive functioning. Leads to them being more:
1. Sensitive to cues
2. Increases reactivity
3. Reduces regulation
4. Reduces thinking about consequences
Wha percentage of all homicides are alcohol related
47%
What percentage of deaths are caused by harmful uses of alcohol
5.9%
Observational learning theory on aggression
We learn to be aggressive by seeing it around us and on media/tv/games due to desensitization of violent material
What is the correlation between media violence and aggression
Moderate (Palik and Comstock)
What did Zillmann and Bryant suggest
Suggested that continued exposure to porn seems to influence people to believe rapist is not fully responsible for actions
The Werther Effect
Phenomenon where a sharp increase in the rate of suicide follows release of a high profile suicide story - some will be done exactly the same way as the publicised suicide. More likely to die by suicide if they relate to age and life circumstances.
The Copycat effect
People are inspired by the story that has been reported in the media that they copy the person from the story e.g. school shootings. previous people have gotten high media coverage so i will copy them to get attention
Social cognitive explanations for aggression
Maladaptive thinking patterns through modelling or observation
Why does crowd violence happen?
We become deindividuated - our superego melts away and id runs rampant. When we feel anonymous we become more aggressive.
When people are ostracised, they tend to
Inflict the same level of discomfort to a neutral person
Factors affecting altruism
Those who were exposed to modelling helping behaviour are much more likely to help
Whether or not the person is in a hurry (Darley and Batson)
What does deindividuation depend on
Context and situation we are sensitive to e.g. if we are wearing cloaks similar to KKK, we will be more aggressive but if we are dressed as a nurse, we will have more positive emotions.
