Attachment Flashcards
Dependency theory of attachment
Freud
Babies are born as helpless balls of biological needs. When babies are in a state of discomfort, mum is always there to satisfy its needs - repeatedly associating herself with the move from biological need to biological satisfaction
What happened to the monkey’s in isolation in Harlow’s experiment
They had unhealthy behaviour - self harm. Disrupted psychological health all the way down to basic biological functions like mating. Females could have babies but their maternal instincts were not present
Did the baby monkey prefer the wire surrogate or the cloth surrogate?
Cloth - smells more like a monkey and offers warmth. Monkey still got fed off wire surrogate so it still went to it to get food.
Bowlby’s theory
Baby loves mother because of security
Babies had Attachment Behavioural System (ABS) - system to maintain a steady state of biological needs
Babies seek proximity to primary caregivers
When is the onset of ABS timed with
Locomotion - thats when they get most vulnerable
Dual motivation theory by Ainsworth
Exploration and security
3 types of responses in strange situation test
- Anxious avoidant (didn’t care when parent left)
- Secure (cried when parent left but was happy when returned)
- Anxious ambivalent (hysterical and couldn’t calm them down even after parent returned)
Causes of secure babies
Feeding on infant-centred schedule. Spent more time in face-to-face contact
Cause of anxious avoidant babies
Disliked contact with infants - put them down in front of a video and left them
Cause of anxious ambivalent
Inconsistency - feed one week on rigid schedule but the next month, feed on baby-centred schedule
No time away from parent so doesn’t know what its like to be away from parent
