- decreases levels of neurotransmitters may cause depression
- BBW: increase risk of suicidal thinking in pts. under 24 with depression

MAOIs pt. counseling
A
- avoid foods and drinks high in tyramine: may cause hypertensive crisis if taken with MAOIs
- avoid OTC drugs containing pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine
- avoid other antidepressants: it taking a different antidepressant, wait 2 weeks before starting MAOI (exception is Prozac, must wait 5 weeks)
- -wait 2 weeks after finishing MAOI before switching to other antidepressant
