Module Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are some examples of first line of defense
Such as Skin and mucous membrane they keep most of the pathogens we encounter at Bay
What are some examples of second line of defense
Production of phagocytic white blood cells and triggering inflammation and fever because these responses are aimed at a broad range of attackers this response is called nonspecific immunity
What is the third line of defense
When the body retains memory of a pathogen after defeating it if exposed to the same pathogen in the future it can quickly recognize it targeting a response at one specific invader
What is lysozyme
A digestive enzyme that destroys bacteria
What is the complement system
Over 20 different proteins that circulate in the bloodstream in an inactive form waiting to assist in immune response
What happens once a complement reaction begins?
The protein embedded themselves into the bacteria’s plasma membrane punching a hole in the bacteria. Liam rush into the bacterial opening until it swells and bursts.
What are Interferons?
Cells respond to a viral Invasion by producing this protein. Warns nearby cells of invaders
What is Pyrogen
A fever producing substance secreted by neutrophils and macrophages. Stimulates the anterior hypothalamus to secrete PGE.
What is Cellular Immunity
Immune response that targets foreign cells or host cells that have become infected with a pathogen
What is chemotaxis
The movement of white blood cells to an area of inflammation in response to the release of chemicals from the injured cells
What is Humoral Immunity
Immune response that uses antibodies to Target pathogens outside the host cells
What is an example of natural active immunity
When the body produces antibodies or T-cells after being exposed to a particular antigen
What is an example of artificial active immunity
When the body makes T cells and antibodies against a disease as a result of a vaccination
What is an example of natural passive immunity
Fetus acquires antibodies from the mother through the placenta or when the baby acquires them through breastfeeding
What is an example of Articificial Passive immunity
Obtaining serum from a person or an animal that has produce antibodies against a certain pathogen and then injecting it into someone else
