Digestive System Flashcards
What is the mucosa?
The innermost later of the digestive tract. Consists of 3 layers of its own- inner layer of epithelium, loose connective tissue, and smooth muscle.
What is the submucosa?
Thicker layer of connective tissue. Contains glands, vessels, lymhatic vessels, and nerves.
What is the muscularis?
Two layers of smooth muscle. The inner layer encircles the tract while the outer layer runs longitudinally.
What is the serosa?
The outmost layer covers the portion of the digestive tract within the peritoneal cavity.
What is the Peritoneum?
It suspends the digestive organs within the abdominal cavity while anchoring them loosely to the abdominal wall.
What does saliva consist of?
Mostly water but also mucus, antibacterial compounds, electrolytes, and two digestive enzymes.
What is the pharynx?
A muscular tube divided into 3 regions: Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, and Laryngopharynx. Food moves through the oro and larynx.
What is the esophagus?
A muscular tube about 10 inches long connecting the pharynx to the stomach. Glands within secrete mucus that helps lubricate food bolus.
What is the stomach?
A muscular sac- primary function is to store food. Also prepares food for digestion.
What does the small intestine do?
Most chemical digestion and nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine. Consists of duodenum, jejunum, and ilium.
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs large amounts of water.
What is amalyse?
Hydrolyze polysaccharides into disaccarides
What is protease?
Enzymes working in the stomach and small intestine to break peptide bonds.
Which 2 glands help in digestion?
Liver and pancreas
