Module 12: Endocrine System Flashcards
What does Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone or Thyrotropin do?
Stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete thyroid hormone.
What does Growth Hormone or Somatropin do?
Acts on the entire body to promote protein synthesis, lipid and carb metabolism, and bone and skeletal muscle growth.
What does Prolactin do?
Stimulates milk production in the mammary glands in females
What does Adrenocorticotropic Hormone do?
Stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete corticosteroids
What does Luteinizing Hormone do?
A gonadotropin stimulates ovulation and estrogen and progesterone synthesis in females and the secretion of testosterone by the testes in males.
What is Follicle Stimulating Hormone
One of the gonadotropins- stimulates the production of eggs in the ovaries of females and sperm in the testes of males.
What connects the hypothalamus and the pituitary
Infundibulum
What does Oxytocin do?
Stimulates contraction of the uterus during childbirth. It also triggers the release of milk during lactation.
What does Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
Acts on the kidneys to reduce urine volume and prevent dehydration. (Water retention)
What hormones are stored by the Posterior Pituitary?
Antidiuretic Hormone and Oxytocin
What does the pineal gland produce?
Melatonin- Triggers sleepiness
What does the Thymus secrete?
Thymosin and Thymopoietin
What does the Thyroid secrete?
T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine)
What does the Parathyroid gland secrete?
Parathyroid Hormone in response to low levels of calcium
What does Aldosterone do?
Promote Sodium retention and Potassium excretion which in turn causes water retention
