Module 5: Diathesis-Stress Model Flashcards
Diathesis-Stress Model
+ individuals inherit tendencies to express certain traits or behaviors which may then be activated under conditions of stress (Eric Kandel)
+ the higher the vulnerability, the lesser life stress needed to trigger traits
+ disturbances stem from a genetic predisposition triggered by stress
Diathesis
a condition that makes someone susceptible to developing a disorder (vulnerability)
Stress
the response or experience of an individual to demands that he or she perceives as taxing or exceeding his or her personal resources
Predisposing Factor
cause of a disorder (e.g. situations that trigger the development of the disorder)
Precipitating Factor
factors that allow the disorders to develop (e.g. factors that could contribute to the development of a disorder)
Protective Factor
reduces the severity of the problem
Perpetuating Factor
factors that maintain the problem once established
