Q

What is the implication of an abandoned buried oil tank?

A

Implications include fuel leakage, which is an environmental issue. Significant cost to clean up soil & remove tank. Issue removing tank b/c it will eventually collapse. In some areas the tank is allowed to be filled with sand or a concrete slurry.

Q

The oil vent pipe allows:
a. oil vapors to vent out of the tank on a hot day
b. air to escape from the tank when tank is filled
c. an overflow condition to dump oil back outside
d. oil supplier a second pipe to fill the tank through

Q

Explain why an exterior, above-ground oil storage tank needs a 2 inch oil supply line, rather than the typical 3/8 inch diameter line.

A

larger pipe allows oil to flow through the line when temperature is very low. Oil becomes very viscous at low temps.

16
Q

What is the purpose of the barometric damper?

A

ensures adequate draft air supply for the chimney

17
Q

How do we prevent combustion gases leaking out the barometric damper?

A

damper can only swing one way, so the forced draft burner pressure can close the damper, but not swing it past the vertical position, which would allow flue gases into house.

18
Q

List 5 common barometric damper problems.

A

rusting, inoperative, missing, misadjusted, inadequate draft air, spillage, improper location

19
Q

Every oil furnace must have a barometric damper. T/F

A

False

20
Q

Since oil combustion gases re hotter than natural gas combustion gases, you will rarely find __ used as an exhaust vent material.

A

aluminum

21
Q

List 6 problems with oil furnace vent connectors

A

rusting, poor slope, too long, clearance to combustibles, loose connections, undersized

22
Q

What is the minimum required clearance to combustibles for a single-wall exhaust flue serving an oil furnace?
a. 1 inch
b. 2 inches
c. 6 inches
d. 18 inches

A

18 inches

23
Q

The vent connector from an oil furnace must connect to the chimney above a vent connector from a water heater. T/F

A

False
