Briefly describe a cross connection.
a cross connection is a piping arrangement in which waste can back up into the supply piping & contaminate it when the pressure drops on the supply side.
List 5 locations in a house where there may be a cross connection.
- Fixtures where the faucet spout is below the overflow or flood rim of fixture
- Fixtures where hand held showers, extendable faucets or vegetable sprayers can be left in tubs, basins, or sinks
- Garden hoses attached to a hose bibb
- Toilet tank where the fill water enters at the bottom
- A water softener
Is a vacuum necessary to have backflow at a cross connection? Y/N
No
Briefly describe water hammer, & why it occurs.
Water hammer is a loud banging sound in the pipes. Water hammer occurs b/c water moving at several feet per second has to stop abruptly when a valve is turned off. The water bounces off the valve & creates a vacuum as it bounces away from the valve. The vacuum then violently attracts the water back to the low pressure area and the water again bounces off the closed valve. The effect of this is a reverberation, which sounds like someone pounding on metal piping with a hammer.
Vertical pipes at ends of runs are one method of preventing water hammer. T/F
True

e. vent
dip tube
What are the 2 methods of rating a water heater?

6 to 12 inches above the floor beside the hot water tank
Where does the temp/pressure relief valve have to discharge water in a warm climate?
6 to 24 inches above grade level outside of the house
If we only need a pressure relief valve because the water heater has some internal temp control, where can this pressure relief valve be?
anywhere on the tank, or on piping near the tank in some jurisdictions
What is the purpose of a baffle or turbulator in a gas fired water heater?
to slow down the exhaust products as they move up through the water heater

Protects the ejector tank & house fixtures that feed the tank from back-up of the municipal sewer system.

Describe in 1 sentence a stop and waste valve.
valve shuts off water, drain cock drains water from pipe
What can cause a toilet to sweat?
Cold supply water on a warm, humid day can cause the toilet tank & toilet fill pipe to sweat, particularly if it is not allowed to warm up because of a running toilet.
How is a mixing valve used to stop a toilet sweating?
This valve mixes hot water with the cold water at the toilet supply. There is less incentive for condensation since the warmer water used to fill the toilet won’t cool the surrounding air to the dewpoint.

Why does it matter if the tub is slightly out of level?
The apron is usually sloped slightly so that water will drain back into the tub. If the tub is not level, water on the apron may drain away from the tub, damaging walls or floors.
Why are tile enclosures on exterior walls in cold climates more vulnerable than ones in warm climates?
