Mitosis and meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
Steps in:
Mitosis
A
- Chromosomes are copied (now has 92)
- The cell’s nucleus disappears and the chromosomes line down the middle of the cell. Spindle fibres are made at each end
- The 2 copies of each chromosome are pulled apart by spindle fibers
- The chromosomes move to different sides of the cell, which begins to split in 2.
- the cell completely splits in 2. There are 2 daughter cells which are diploid and identical

Q
What are the steps for:
Meiosis
A
- DNA is replicated, and some genes are swapped
- Chromosomes line up in the centre
- Chromosome pairs seperate
- First cell division leading to 2 genetically different cells
- Chromosomes line up in the centre
- Chromosomes split
- Second cell division leading to 4 haploid genetically different cells
