Mitosis Flashcards
what happens in interphase
all of the DNA in the nucleus is replicated, Each DNA molecule is converted into two identical DNA molecules called chromatids, all the organelles are replicated and the cell grows in size
what happens during prophase
chromatin fibres condense to form chromosomes, the nucleolus disappears, nuclear membrane breaks down, centrioles migrate to the poles of the cell, spindle fibres are formed and attach to the centromeres and start to move the chromosomes to the centre of the cell
what happens during metaphase
the chromosomes are moved by the spindle fibres to form the metaphase plate in the cell centre
what happens during anaphase
the chromatids are separated and pulled to opposite poles of the cell by the spindle fibres
what happens during telophase
chromatids are now chromosomes, the chromosomes assemble at each pole and the nuclear envelope reforms, chromosomes uncoil into chromatin, nucleolus forms
what happens in cytokinesis
the actual division of the cell into two separate cells, begins during telophase
