Mycobacterium Leprae
Causes Leprosy that attacks peripheral nerves.
What do spirochaetes look like?
Long spiral shaped bacteria
Look wavy on microscopy
How are spirochaetes viewed diagnosed?
Dark ground microscopy
Serology
Immunofluorescence
What are 3 common spirochaete organisms? (BLT BIP)
Borrelia Burgdorferi
Leptospira Interrogans
Treponema Pallidum
What does borrelia Burgdorferi cause?
Lymes disease
What does leptospira Interrogans cause?
Leptospirosis
What does treponema Pallidum cause?
Syphilis
What is unusual about chlamydia cultures?
Cant be cultured on Agar but can in cell lines.
Other than culture how is chlamydia diagnosed?
Serology
Why cant Chlamydia species be cultured in agar?
Chlamydia are obligate intracellular parasites
I.e. they require the host cell to grow.
