What are the 3 main divisions of fungi?
Basidiomycetes
Ascomycetes
Zygomycetes
Basidio-, Asco-, Zygo- mycetes.
What kinds of fungi are basidiomycetes?
Some of the moulds & mushrooms plus a few yeasts
What kinds of fungi are in ascomycetes?
Moulds yeasts & some mushrooms
What kind of fungi are Zygomycetes?
Moulds only
What defines a basidiomycete?
HAving basidia below the mushrooms cup (see summative notes for diagram)
Whats a basidium?
A section of fungi with sterigmata on the surface which attach to basidiospores which can be realeased to spread the fungi.
Who do fungi normally infecT?
Immunocompromised patients.
Whats the main reason its hard to find drugs to specifcally target fungal infections?
Their eukaryotes
Unlike bacteria whicha re prokaryotes.
Many drugs effecting fungi also affect the body.
What are the spores of Basidiomycetes
Sexual -Basidiospores
Asexual - Condium
What are the spores of Ascomycetes?
Sexual - Ascospores
Asexual - Condium
What are the spores of Zygomycetes?
Sexual - Zygospore
Asexual - Sporangiospore
What are the 2 main types of fungal infection?
Dermatophytes
Systemic fungi
What and why do dermatophytes attack?
They attack skin
Becuase they digest keratin as a nutrient source
What do dermatophytes often cause>
Ringworm infections

Pityriasis Versicolor
Yeast that forms hyphae in skin
