Misc Flashcards
Which bacterial toxins are encoded by a lysogenic phage?
ABCDE shigA-like toxin Botulinum toxin (certain strains) Cholera toxin Diphtheria toxin Erythrogenic toxin of Strep. pyogenes
Patient with Hx of smoking presents with pneumonia, diarrhea, and confusion.
Legionella
Describe Listeria monocytogenes’ laboratory characteristics.
Gram (+) rods, catalase (+), non-sporulating
Characteristic tumbling motility. Actin rockets to move from cell to cell.
How is Listeria transmitted?
transmitted through unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses, deli meats, vaginal delivery.
Disease caused by Listeria in normal, healthy individuals
mild gastroenteritis
diseases caused by Listeria in pregnancy, neonates, immunocompromised pts?
Pregnancy: amnionitis, septicemia, spontaneous abortion.
Neonates: meningitis, granulomatosis infantiseptica
Immunocompromised: meningitis
Why does Listeria cause granuloma formation in infants?
Listeria is phagocytosed by MΦs, but prevents intracellular killing by escaping from the phagosome before fusion with the lysosome. Streptolysin O and phospholipase C allow this escape.
What Abx for Nocardia? Actinomyces?
oh, SNAP!
Sulfa drugs for Nocardia.
Actinomyces req’s Penicillin.
What does S. aureus’ Protein A do?
Binds Fc portion of Ig to prevent complement fixation and phagocytosis.
4 infections for which S. pneumoniae is the most common cause.
MOPS Meningitis Otitis media Pneumonia Sinusitis
