Microbiology - Fungi Flashcards
Multicellular colonies composed of clumps of intertwined branching hyphae?
Molds/Mycelia
Unicellular growth form of fungi?
Yeast
Hyphae?
Treadlike, cylindrical, tubules composed of fungal cells attached end to end.
Spores?
The reproducing bodies of molds.
Saprophytes?
Fungi that utilize organic matter(soil, rotten vegetation) as an energy source.
The essential sterol in fungi?
Ergosterol.
Fungal cell wall?
surrounding the cell membrane, composed mainly of carbohydrates with some proteins.
Fungal capsule?
Polysaccharide coating that surrounds the cell wall.
Pityriasis versicolor?
chronic superficial fungal infection that leads to hypo- or hyperpigmented patches on the skin.
Tinea nigra?
Superficial fungal infection that causes dark brown to black painless patches.
What causes Pityriasis versicolor?
Malassezia furfur
Three common dermatophytes?
1 Microsporum
2 Trichophyton
3 Epidermophyton
Tinea corporis?
Invasion of the horny layer of the skin. Called ring worm.
Tinea pedis?
Athlete’s foot.
Tinea unguium?
The nails are thickened, discolored and brittle.
Three manifestations of Candida albicans?
Mouth - oral trush
Groin - diaper rash
Vagina - candida vaginitis
Sporotrichosis, spread and manifestations?
The infection spreads along lymphatics to local nodes. Presents as nodules. This nodule ulcerates and become necrotic. As it heals, new ulcers pop up along the lymphatic tracts.
Three fungi that cause systemic disease?
1 Histoplasma capsulatum(uncapsulated)
2 Blastomyces dermatidis
3 Coccioides immitis
Compare Histoplasma, Blastomyces and Coccidioides with tuberculosis
Like tuberculosis:
Inhaled, primary infection in the lung.
Asymptomatic, mild, severe or chronic lung infection.
Lung granulomas, calcifications and/or cavitations.
Can disseminate hematogenously to distant sites.
3/4 of cryptococcus neoformans occur in?
Immunocompromised persons.
What two forms of Candidiasis manifest in immunocompromised, but not in immunocompetent people?
Esophagitis - Extension of oral trush cause substernal pain. Never seen in the immunocompetent!
Disseminated - invade the blood stream and from there any organ. Candida albicans is part of normal flora, but isolation from blood is never normal.
Three major diseases caused by Aspergillus fumigatus?
1 Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis
2 Aspergilloma - lung cavities
3 invasive aspergillosis - invasive infection of lung
Toxin produced by Aspergillosis?
Aflatoxin
Common cancer in subsaharan africa that’s related to aspergillosis?
Half of the cancers south of the sahara desert are liver cancers and 40% of screened foods contain aflatoxins.
Three primary pathogens of Mucormycosis?
1 Rhizopus
2 Rhizomucor
3 Mucor
Name two fungi-like bacteria?
Actinomycetes and Nocardia frequently grow as mold and are soil and water saprophytes. Still, both are truly bacteria.
