Microbiology - chapter 16 - Bacteria without cells walls Flashcards
2 pathogenic species of Mycoplasmataceae?
Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Ureaplasma urealyticum
What are the tiniest free-living organisms capable of self-replication?
Mycoplasmataceae
Mycoplasma pneumoniae, mechanism of disease?
Mycoplasmae pneumoniae attaches to respiratory epithelial cells with the help of Protein P1. After 2-3 week incubation periods, patients will have a gradual onset of fever, malaise, dry persistent cough.
What are cold agglutinins?
Monoclonal IgM antibodies that bind to “I” antigen. The “I” antigen is a common red cell antigen that appears to be modified and made antigenic during an infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Ureaplasma urealyticum, general info?
Loves to swim around in urine and produce urease to break down urea. Normal flora in 60% of healthy sexually active women and commonly cause lower UTI.
What do Mycoplasmataceae use to create a more stable and shielding cell membrane?
Sterols, like cholesterol.
