Microbiology - chapter 10 - Hospital aquired gram-negs Flashcards
Name four often highly resistant gram-negative bacteria
1 Pseudomonas
2 Acinetobacter
3 Stenotrophomonas
4 Burkholderia
What are the four W’s?
1 Wind - pneumonia, often associated with ventilators.
2 Water - UTI, seen with catherterization.
3 Wound - broken skin is an invitation for infectious disease.
4 Wires - e.g. IV lines.
All four are common ways of spreading hospital aquired gram-neg infections.
Two reasons for the clinical significance of Psudomonas?
1 Opportunistic - colonizes and infects sick & immunocompromized
2 Resistant to almost every antibiotic out there
Pseudomonas pathomechanism?
Exotoxin A - which has the same mechanism of action as diptheria toxin(stops protein synthesis)
Important Pseudomonas infections?
BE PSEUDO =
Burns
Endocarditis
Pneumonia Sepsis External malignant otitis media UTI Diabetic Osteomyelitis
Patients with cystic fibrosis are at greatest risk for disease due to this pathogen?
Burkholderia cepacia - an environmental bacteria that can grow in water, soil, plants and animals.
Three good ways of preventing hospital aquired infections are?
1 Good hand hygiene by healthcare practitioners.
2 Limited use of invasive devices.
3 Judicious use of antibiotics.
