what is it active against
Metronidazole is an antimicrobial drug with high activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.
dose for Helicobacter pylori eradication [in combination with other drugs]
400 mg twice daily for 7 days for first- and second-line eradication therapy; 10 days for third-line eradication therapy.
dose for BV oral (2 options)
400–500 mg twice daily for 5–7 days, alternatively 2 g for 1 dose.
dose for BV vaginal gel
1 applicatorful once daily for 5 days, dose to be administered at night.
dose for PID
400 mg twice daily for 14 days.
dose for acute oral infections, adult
400 mg every 8 hours for 3–7 days.
cautions topical use
Avoid exposure to strong sunlight or UV light
5 warning labels
- do not drink alcohol
- space doses evenly; keep taking till finished
- take with or after food or a meal
- swallow whole, do not crush or chew
- take with full glass of water

Do not drink alcohol while you’re taking metronidazole, including the 2 days after you finish
Alcohol potentially causes a disulfiram-like reaction when given with Metronidazole.
disulfuram + metronidazole interaction
Disulfiram increases the risk of acute psychoses when given with Metronidazole.
metronidazole + lithium
Metronidazole is predicted to increase the concentration of Lithium. Manufacturer advises avoid or adjust dose.
metronidazole + vit K antagonists
Metronidazole increases the anticoagulant effect of Warfarin. Manufacturer advises monitor INR and adjust dose.
nitrofurantoin, amiodarone, -platins, -taxels, phenytoin, vinka alkaloids, isoniazid interaction with metronidazole
