Q

a patient is admitted to hospital and the consultant wants to initiate them on linezolid for a diabetic foot infection. these are the medications she regularly takes: metformin, gliclazide, ramipril, indapamide, fostair 100/6 inhaler (formoterol, budesonide). is this appropriate

Q

is linezolid active against MRSA

A

yes

17
Q

when can resistance to linezolid develop

A

prolonged treatment
or if dose is less than that recommended

18
Q

why should you give linezolid in combination with other abx for mixed infections that might also involve gram -ve organisms

A

because linezolid is not active against gram negative organisms

19
Q

what are common side effects of linezolid

A

anaemia
increased risk of infection
diarrhoea, constipation
GI discomfort
insomnia
localised pain

20
Q

bacteriostatic or bactericidal

A

bacteriostatic

21
Q

moa

A

bacteriostatic

inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by attaching to the 23S ribosomal RNA of the 50S subunit
