Pharmacology and presentation of Metoclopramide?
A
10mg/2ml ampoule
Antiemetic that inhibits dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT3 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone. Metoclopramide also promotes gut motility by inhibiting presynaptic and postsynaptic D2 receptors as well as presynaptic 5-HT4 receptors (smooth muscle).

A
- Nausea/vomiting associated with: narcotic pain relief &/pr past Hx of migraine

Contraindications of Metoclopramide?
A
- Hypersensitivity
- <16years
- GIT haemorrhage, obstruction or perforation

Cautions of Metoclopramide?
A
- Undiagnosed abdominal pain

Side Effects of Metoclopramide?
(4x head, mouth, heart & muscle)
A
- Drowsiness
- Lethargy
- Dry mouth
- Muscle Tremor
- Hypotension or hypertension
- Extrapyramidal reaction
- Lowers seizure threshold

Onset and duration of Metoclopramide?
A
- Onset = 1-3 min IV or 10-15 minutes IM
- Duration = 10-30 minutes IV or 1-2 hours IM
