Pharmacology and presentation of Dexamethasone?
A
8mg/2ml Vial
Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid (glucocorticoid), mimics steroids normally secreted by the adrenal cortex. Its properties allow for inhibition of inflammatory reactions and immunosuppression. It is often also used for chemotherapy associated nausea and a number of palliative symptoms’ control.

Indicators of Dexamethasone?
A
- Bronchospasm associated with acute resp distress nonresponsive to nebulised salbutamol
- Acute exacerbation of COPD
- Suspected Croupe
- Severe Covid

Contraindications of Dexamethasone?
A
- Hypersensitivity to Dexamethasone/other corticosteroids

Cautions of Dexamethasone?
A
- Only relevant at prolonged/high dose use
- However, if solution is not clear or is contaminated it should be discarded (as no antimicrobial agent).
