Pharmacology and presentation of Glucose?

A

Glucose 5%
- 100ml infusion soft pack (5g glucose monohydrate and water)
- Glucose 5% is an isotonic crystalloid solution and a form of pure
glucose (sugar).

Glucose 10%
- 250ml infusion soft pack (25g glucose monohydrate and water)
- 10% Hypertonic glucose solution

Paste
- 15g Glucose Paste
- Hypertonic sugar solution for oral use

Indicators of Glucose?

A
  • 5% = Vehicle for dilution and administration of IV drugs
  • 10% = Diabetic hypoglycaemia (< 4mmol/L) in Pts with an altered conscious state who are unable to self-administer oral glucose
  • Paste = Diabetic hypoglycaemia (< 4mmol/L) in conscious Pt’s who can self-administer oral glucose
