Pharmacology and presentation of Ibuprofen?

A

200mg Tablet
100mg/5ml liquid

Ibuprofen is a NSAID, predominantly used as an analgesic. Inhibits prostaglandin synthetase, reducing prostaglandin production and causing a reduction in inflammation, pain and fever.

  • Mild to moderate pain secondary to inflammation or soft tissue injury.

Contraindications of Ibuprofen?

A
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Heart failure/CVD
  • Pregnancy - 3rd trimester
  • Pt taking anticoagulants
  • Previous renal disease
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Current bleed, GI bleed or peptic ulcer
  • Children <3 months

A
  • Asthma (increased bronchospasm)
  • Previous hx of GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
  • Dehydration, hypovolaemia, diuretic treatment
  • Elderly
  • Varicella Zoster (Chicken pox)
