action and side effects

A

Blocks the central dopamine receptors to provide
anti-nausea/antiemetic effect. It also increases
muscle contractions in the upper gastrointestinal
tract, speeding up the rate at which the content of
the stomach passes into the intestines.
SIDE EFFECTS
• Restlessness
• Drowsiness/fatigue
• Dystonic reactions (eg: facial muscle spasm,
trismus, slurred speech)

Indications, contraindicatinons & precautions

A
• Nausea and vomiting,
which can also be
associated with:
• Cardiac chest pain
• Severe gastroenteritis
• Previously diagnosed migraine headaches
• KSAR
• Suspected intestinal/
bowel obstruction
• Suspected or known
haematemesis/melaena
(i.e. vomiting blood, bloody
faeces)
• Paediatric patients <15yrs
• Pregnant patients
PRECAUTIONS
• Elderly patients
• Previous history of
dystonic reaction to
Metoclopramide
