Methods of data collection: self report technique Flashcards
what is data?
The information we collect.
What is the self report technique?
when we colelct data, by asking participants to provide information about their thoughts, feeling, and behaviours.
What are the two ways in which we can use the self report technique?
- QUESTIONAIRES: Questions can be written down in advance, and participants write down responses thmselfes.
- INTERVIEWS: When questions are asked verbally to the participants.
What are the two types of questions?
Open and closed.
What is an open question?
When participants are allowed to answer in their own words.
What is a closed question?
When participants are given a range of fixed answers to choose from.
what are the advantages of closed questions?
- Responses are easy to count up, which means they are easier to count up and analyse, when compared to open questions.
- quick, easy, and less confusing for participants to answer, making them more likely to participate in the study, thus making the study more representative.
what are the cons of closed questions?
In closed questions, some fixed answers might nit be representative to the participants actual attitudes, which means results might nt be valid.
Researchers get less detailed information from the participants.
What are the advantages of open questions?
- In open questions, results are more representative of the participants feelings, making the study more valid.
- open questions have more detailed answers.
what is a structured interview?
If the questions are all decided ina dvance
what is an unstructured interview?
If the questions arent all decided in advance.
compare the structured interviews, to the unstructured interviews.
- Structured interviews are more likely to be reliable, because all the participants get asked the same questions.
- Unstructured interviews, enables researcher to get more information from their participants, when compared to structurd interviews.
what are the two main problems with the self-report technique?
1.Personal bias : how some people think they behave, isnt actually how they behave., so their answers might not be accurate. People resppnses might not be objective.
2.social desirability bias: People might lie and give different responses in order to appear more socially acceptable and avoid negative judgement.
Explain speed of data collection when comparing interviews VS questionaires
questionaires are faster and easier to distribute to participants , meaning data can be collected more easily.
explain investigator effects when comparing interviews VS questionaires
With questionaires, participants are less likely to be influenced by investigator effects.
—- during interview, researcher may accidently reveal ain, which leads to demand characteristics.
