metabolism Flashcards
what is metabolism?
chemical reactions that take place in cells
what are the 2 types of metabolic reactions?
catabolic metabolism
anabolic metabolism
what do cells require for efficient metabolism?
oxygen and nutrients
what are catabolic reactions?
the reaction in which large molecules are broken down into smaller ones
- cellular respiration
- digestion
what are anabolic reactions?
the reaction in which small molecules are built up into larger ones
what are organic compounds?
molecules that contain a carbon chain
what are carbohydrates?
- saccharides
- used for energy
- monomer = glucose
monosaccharides = simple sugar = sucrose (fructose & glucose)
disaccharides = 2 simple sugars = fructose
polysaccharides = many simple sugars = starch
what are proteins?
- polypeptides
- amino acids are joined together in special sequences by your body to make its proteins
- monomer = amino acids
polypeptides = many proteins
enzymes = protease
what are fats?
- fats get broken down into fatty acids + glycerol by the enzyme lipase
- monomer = fatty acid + glycerol
- most common fat = triglyceride
enzyme = lipase
what are nutrients?
- water = fluid which other substances are dissolved
- carbs = main source of energy
- lipids = broken down into fatty acid and glycerol = broken down to release energy
- proteins = broken into amino acids
- minerals = co-factors for enzymes
