blood types Flashcards
what is whole blood?
blood taken from patients with added chemicals to prevent blood clotting
what are red cell concentrates?
- most widely used component of blood
- made by centrifuging whole blood to separate cells from plasma
what are platelet concentrates?
given to patients with abnormal or reduced number of platelets
what is plasma?
- the liquid part of blood
- given to patients needing extra clotting factors
what is cryoprecipitate?
obtained by freezing the plasma and thawing it slowly
what are immunoglobulins?
group of proteins that act as antibodies
- extracted form plasma of suitable donors
what are ABO blood groups?
- sugars
- people with type O = universal doners
what are ABO blood groups?
- sugars
- people with type O = universal doners
what are Rh blood groups?
- based on antigens that occur on the surface of red blood cells
- proteins
RH antigens = RH+
NO RH antigens = RH -
RH+ = cant produce anti RH
RH - = can produce RH
what is agglutination?
clumping together of micro-organisms or blood cells
what is an antigen?
substance capable of causing the formation of antibodies when introduced to tissues
what is an antigen?
substance capable of causing the formation of antibodies when introduced to tissues
what is an antibody?
a substance produced in response to a specific antigen which can combine with that antigen to destroy it
describe blood type A
antigen = A
antibody = Anti - B
can donate to = A, AB
receive from = A, O
describe blood type B
antigen = B
antibody = Anti - S
can donate to = B, AB
receive from = B, O
