male reproductive system Flashcards
what are primary sex organs
organs that produce gametes (ovaries and testes)
what are the male gonads?
testes
what are the male gametes and where are they produced?
sperm - testes
where is sperm first produced?
seminiferous tubules
where does meiosis take place in the male reporductive system?
seminiferous tubules in the testicles
what are the 3 glands that produce secretions in the semen?
seminal vesicle, prostate gland and bulbo-urethral gland
how is the temp controlled in the testes?
through muscle fibres.
hot = testicles relax
cold = testicles contract
seminiferous tubules
where sperm are produced (in the Sertoli cells of the testes)
epidiymis
where the sperm mature
Interstitial cells
secrete testosterone
vas deferens
carries sperm away from the testis
male urethra
duct in males that carries urine and also semen to the exterior
what does the seminal vesicle do?
secrete a thick alkaline fluid, rich in sugar, that provides energy for the sperm
what does the prostate gland do?
secretes a thin milky alkaline fluid, which neutralizes the acidity of the vagina/cervical fluids
what does the bulbourethral gland do?
secretes mucous for the lubrication of sperm to aid its movement
