what is coitus interruptus?
- Male withdraws penis before ejaculation
- Easy to do
- Doesn’t cost anything
- Highly inefficient and ineffective
what is abstinence?
-Avoid sexual intercourse
100% effective
Not fun
what is rhythm?
Female maps menstrual cycle (sex avoided 4 days before and after ovulation)
not effective
what is a condom?
- Rubber/latex sheath that traps sperm during sexual intercourse
- Easy to obtain and use
- Protects against STI’s
- Stops the flow of sex
what is a diaphragm?
- Dome of rubber placed over the cervix
- Only need to use during sex
- Must stay in place for 6 hours after sex
what is the combined pill
- Pill of oestrogen and progesterone taken at same time everyday-prevents egg form being released from ovaries
- Can reduce PMS and period pain
- Must be taken at the same time every day
what is the implant?
Small rod with progesterone placed under the skin-prevents egg from being released and sperm reaching the egg
Lasts for 3 years
Weight gain
what is the IUD?
Copper- non hormonal – fitted in uterus prevents sperm form entering uterus/implantation
Mirena- hormonal – IUD with progesterone prevents sperm reaching egg
Can stay in place for up to 5 years
Must be fitted by a doctor
what is the morning after pill?
- Massive dose of progesterone that prevents fertilized egg from implanting
- Taken up to 120 hours after sex
Emergency use - Very expensive
what is tubal ligation
Fallopian tubes are cut and tied which prevents egg from reaching uterus/being fertilized
- Can be reversed
- Can lead to complications-pain, infection
what is a vasectomy?
- Small sections of the vas deferens are cut and ends tied off to prevent any sperm from getting through
- Can be reversed
- Operation needed to reverse
