Q

What is Addisons disease?

A

Insufficient cortisol and aldosterone production. Hypofunction of adrenal medulla.

  • Fluid and electrolyte imbalance
  • hypotension
  • weakness
  • anorexia

Q

What is Cushings disease?

A

Adrenal dysfunction with hyperfunction of the adrenal gland allowing for excessive cortisol.

  • persistent hyperglycemia
  • growth failure
  • trunk obesity
  • buffalo hump, moonshaped face
  • weakness
  • acne
  • HTN

Rx; monitor weight, electrolyte and fluid imbalances, low demand endurance, resistive ex, stress mgt. Prone to tendon rupture, monitor BP for HTN

16
Q

Tay-sachs disease

A

lysosomal storage disorder - absence of hexosaminidase A leading to accumulation of GM2 in the brain - missing developmental milestones

17
Q

Phenylketonuria

A

Amino acid metabolic disorder - inherited

Behavioural and cognitive changes

18
Q

Wilsons disease

A

unable to metabolise copper, ataxia, choreoathetoid movements, hepatitis, cirrhosis

19
Q

Osteomalacia

A

Dietary deficiency or poor calcium absorption

Associ with celiac, kidney or liver disease. Soft bones bow and fracture easily

20
Q

Osteogenesis imperfecta

A

Abnormal synthesis of type I collagen - pathological fractures

21
Q

Osteopetrosis

A

Reduced osteoclast activity = increased fragility of bones

22
Q

Pagets diesase

A

Increased osteoclast activity - excessive bone lacking structural integrity. Large weak bones.
